Nanak Shah Fakir: Ban disappoints Chandigarh moviegoers

After a ban in Punjab, the screening of the controversial film, Nanak Shah Fakir, was also banned in Chandigarh, hours before its release on Friday.

The reason behind the decision is being seen as the objections raised by some members of the local gurdwara parbandhak committee, saying that depiction of a Sikh guru was against the tenets of the religion.

Consequently, there were last-minute cancellations, leading to chaos among the prospective viewers, who had booked tickets in advance either online or from the multiplex ticket counters.

Out of the league

Shedding his image of adapting more comedy films, Punjabi actor Gippy Grewal is firm on following his perspective of exploring something new this year.

The Jatt James Bond actor will be seen foraying into Bollywood with his film titled Second Hand Husband. The movie also marks the debut of actor Govinda’s daughter Narmada Ahuja.

Conversing about the film’s storyline, Gippy says, “For the first time, a movie on the concept of marriage alimony has been made in Bollywood. It is not a slapstick comedy. I will tag it as intelligent humour. Just like Vicky Donor and Queen, this film also has a message to convey.” Many parts of the film have been shot in Jalandhar and the project is currently in its post-production stage.

First biopic on Guru Nanak

While biopics are being made in quite a few numbers, the soon-to-be released Nanak Shah Fakir is one that stands out by quite a margin. This is the first time the story of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, is being attempted to be told on the big screen, however, without a protagonist.

In town on Tuesday, HT City interacted with actor Adil Hussain who spoke about his role in the film and shared a couple of other details as well. “I play the character of Rai Bular, who had great affection for the young Guru Nanak and held him in high esteem. Bular dreams about the birth of Guru Nanak and realises that he (Guru Nanak) is a special person and takes the responsibility to look after his financial needs,” said Hussain whose role is divided in three parts in the film: as a 35-yearold disciple when Guru Nanak was born, a 65-yearold when he goes overseas, and then an 85-year-old when he returns and meets him. After Guru Nanak’s sister, Nanki, Rai Bular was his second disciple.

Men rule the world of culinary art. Think about master chefs and some names that come up to mind are Sanjeev Kapoor, Vikas Khanna, Ajay Chopra, and Kunal Kapur. Tarla Dalal long held the fort for women but it has now fallen to kitchen kings.

Chef Kunal Kapur has a theory on why men make good cooks.“In urban Indian society, parents encourage their daughters to go out and work, but once into marriage, women have to balance job with the responsibilities of cooking,” says Kapur, who was at the Dr Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management, Chandigarh, to give students a demonstration of using avocado in the Indian cuisine. So, do the chefs cook at home? “Too much of cooking at work tires me so much that unless it’s a holiday, I also prefer not to,” said the culinary artist.
